BIG Nigerian Independence Day and BHM Launch

The reception marks the 65th Nigerian Independence Day, offering space to reflect on the impact and contribution of the Nigerian and wider African and Caribbean diaspora to the British public sector.
The evening will highlight stories of identity, career journeys, and community pride, while fostering greater awareness of the need for representation, outreach, and visibility of Black and mixed heritage public servants. Linked to BIG’s mission to bring people from the community together in unique experiences.
We will be using this reception to launch into this years Black History Month theme - Standing Firm in Power and Pride!
The event theme: Leadership, Legacy & the Future of Black Excellence in Public Service speaks to the shared experience of diaspora communities and the continued efforts to create more inclusive and connected public service environments.

Power & Pride: A Legacy of Leadership and The Burden of visibility
As we mark Black History Month, this event explores what it means to lead while Black in the across sectors. Celebrating legacy while addressing and unpacking the weight of visibility.
We bring together a panel of current and former Black and mixed-heritage leaders from across government, the NHS, and local authorities to speak candidly about their journeys.
Together, they will reflect on:
Pride in heritage and the importance of representation
Navigating leadership in institutions still striving for equity and inclusion
The unspoken expectations from junior Black colleagues and those who see them as role models
The challenges of visibility in organisations where diversity is still evolving
How they have stood firm in their values amidst systemic barriers

Resilience and Empowerment in Tech Leadership
Join us in a gathering where IT and Civil Service professionals from BAME backgrounds will explore the intersect of Black identity, professional excellence in IT and the journey of resilience and empowerment in tech leadership.
The panel will share details of their individual career journeys, unpack some myths about the tech/digital career sector within both public and private sectors as well as welcoming questions from the audience to ensure attendees receive real wisdom that they can apply wherever they are in their journeys.

BIG Insight Tour
A unique experience to visit the Supreme Court as part of our private group. Tours are led by an experienced guide who will show you the beautiful courtrooms and provide insight into the workings of the Supreme Court. You will also visit the stunning Library which is usually closed to the public.
This opportunity might be of particular interest to students interested in a career in law, politics, Government, history, politics or recent graduates.
